John Richardson and John Rae seek Franklin overland.
They find nothing. |
1850-54 |
Multiple expeditions look for Franklin including
Robert McClure of Wexford, on board Investigator. He
becomes the first man to complete a Northwest Passage,
though partly on foot over ice and in three different
vessels. |
1852-54 |
Edward Belcher takes five ships to Lancaster Sound.
He returns with only one (the other ships all become
icebound). The ships included Tipperary born Captain
Henry Kellett's Resolute and Dundalk born Captain
Leopald McClintock's Intrepid. |
1853-54 |
John Rae discovers relics of Franklin's expedition
and hears of its demise from Inuit. |
1857-59 |
Leopold McClintock sent out by Lady Franklin, to
confirm Raes story. He finds three corpses and detritus
of Franklin's crew. A note in a cairn confirms
Franklin's death and many others from unknown causes.
